World Smokefree May 2024:
"We're Backing You"
In celebration of World Smokefree May 2024, the theme "We're Backing You" highlights the importance of whanaungatanga and comprehensive support. As part of Aotearoa's national campaign to be Smokefree by 2025, this theme is beautifully encapsulated by the whakatauki: "Taituara, taiwhare, taieke" - with backing, even the tallest ocean waves can be conquered.
Toki Rau Kaitaia World Smokefree Event
The Toki Rau Kaitaia World Smokefree event was a fun-filled afternoon held on May 31, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Te Hiku Hauora Front Carpark, 49 Redan Road, Kaitaia. It was a heartwarming celebration of our whānau who have embraced and maintained a smoke-free lifestyle.
Attendees enjoyed free kai from Pops Kai, The Palate smoothies, and Roadside Hit coffee. It was a great opportunity for whānau to engage with Toki Rau Smokefree practitioners and Te Hiku Hauora Outreach programs, including Te Kahu Taurima, Cancer Coordination Team, Te Puna Poipoia, Wellbeing, Breast Screening, and Mobile Nurses.
Community Celebration
Neighbours, workmates, whānau, tamariki, and kaumatua came together for this festive community event. Tamariki learned about the sugar content in beverages, and many enjoyed the photo booth. Laughter filled the air, reflecting the joy and support of the community.
The clear message of a smokefree environment and the benefits of breathing fresh air resonated throughout the event, reinforcing our commitment to a healthier, smokefree future for Aotearoa.
