About the role
The Medical Director for Te Hiku Hauora General Practices is responsible for ensuring that the highest standard of clinical care is delivered and that targets and objectives are met in line with national and local standards.
The Medical Director's responsibilities include

Being present on Te Hiku Hauora site

Leading a robust team of health professionals in Te Hiku Hauora General Practices

Supporting a comprehensive vision for clinical care that integrates all specialties into a unified whole-person approach to client care

Reinforcing priorities for clinical quality improvement initiatives and service expansion opportunities
-
Overseeing the development of clinical standards of care, procedures, and protocols that support excellence in client care.

The Medical Director will also provide direct client care in the General Practice.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Practice Leadership

Collaborates with Te Hiku Hauora colleagues to develop and drive a comprehensive vision for general practice care that integrates with other Te Hiku Hauora services.

Participates as a fully engaged member of Te Hiku Hauora Clinical Governance Group and attend other clinical meetings as necessary to ensure organizational success and service line integration.

Ensure clinical protocols, procedures, and workflows are current and provide evidence-based standards of care in the General Practice.

Evaluate and prioritise clinical quality improvement initiatives and service expansion opportunities that best achieve the mission of Te Hiku Hauora.

Participate in the recruitment process for new clinicians and staff within the General Practice, ensuring candidates are qualified and demonstrate core values and behaviours in line with Te Hiku Hauora.

Serve as medical champion for clinic projects and initiatives occurring within the General Practice, supporting clinicians, staff, and community to adopt proposed changes.

Provide support and supervision to front-line doctors and where necessary clinicians.

Ensure medical professionals meet the cultural, clinical, and performance expectations of Te Hiku Hauora through peer reviews, observations, supervision, and ongoing performance evaluation.

Key leadership responsibilities as necessary to ensure organizational and service line success.
Clinical Services

Provide clinical care, to include supporting a proportionate client panel in the General Practice.

Assume responsibility for the care of their clients.

Performs procedures, and medical work within the scope of their training.

Integrates the work of the clinic with other programs in the centre and community to assist clients
-
Acts as Supervising Physician for non-medical staff as required, signing off on key protocols. Available for consultation with such staff for unusual or difficult medical problems.

Maintains up to date knowledge in the practice of medicine relevant to Te Hiku Hauora General Practice client.

Becomes familiar with and complies with all relevant policies and procedures relating to the management of the General Practice and its employees.

Adapts medical treatment and orders to the needs of client, always with best practices in mind.

Completes legible medical records in a timely manner on a daily basis, including completing accurate and timely charting in the Client Management System, medical records on client transactions, orders, test results, and progress notes summarizing client care for continuity of care between appointments.

Participates in a comprehensive quality improvement process which includes routine auditing of medical records to ensure quality clinical care and that clinic protocols are followed.

Attends continuing education programs and provides evidence of necessary education completion to upgrade skills and maintain licensing requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

New Zealand Health System, primary health care and General Practice.

Current, standard primary health care practices, treatments, tests, and therapies.

Current therapies in addition to complying with requirements for Continuing Medical Education.

Current knowledge of clinical operations and the delivery of quality medical care consistent with a General Practitioner.

Current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise.
Skills in:

Efficient and effective use of the Client Management system.

Using a computer for word processing, data entry, and email.

Exercising good judgment in clinical decision making and client care.

Position Requirements:
-
Candidates should have the following essential skills and experiences:
-
Vocational registration as a General Practitioner in New Zealand.
-
Advanced understanding of the issues that face Māori clients and their whānau.
-
Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and addressing inequities in primary care.
-
Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners for a minimum of five years.
-
Maintain clinical general practice experience of a minimum of two tenths – spending one day each a week- at our General Practice sites (Mamaru and Kaitaia GP practices)

Experience as a General Practitioner in a Rural Community.
-
Expert relationship management including building and maintaining collaborative relationships .
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-
Experience in effective small and large group facilitation.
