“The service we provide has been a god send to our people” so says Leanne Walker, home support worker for Te Hiku Hauora home support services. Leanne has been a home support worker for 18 years and during that time she has obtained a wealth of experience in the provision of home based care for the elderly and disabled. She enjoys helping people, bringing a smile to their faces and helping them achieve the little everyday tasks that they may find difficult to accomplish. What she loves most about her job is the people she meets and learning that each client has a different need and that when you get to spend time in their homes with them, there’s a wide range of tasks or things that she, as their support worker, can help them with or support them to achieve “…that’s very gratifying and is a great satisfaction to me” she says.
Janine De Lone is one of Leanne’s clients; she says that having home based support services “…allows me to have a better quality of life so that I can stay more independent” She adds that “whilst it may take a little time to adjust to having someone come into your private space; with the right support worker, it can make your life much easier and less stressful” Leanne does the household tasks that Janine finds difficult to complete; often “going out of her way to be helpful in every way she can”. Of Te Hiku Hauora home support service itself; Janine says “…they are very helpful and go out of their way to make sure your needs are met”.
