Free Teen Dentistry
All teens aged 13 to 17 years old are eligible to receive free basic dental treatments. Our dentists can provide this service.
The services include:
- Examinations
- Radiographs (if required)
- Preventative treatment such as fluoride application and fissure sealants
- Root canal fillings
- Extractions (but not orthodontic extractions)
- Oral health education and encouragement to continue good oral health
- Restorative treatment

Who is eligible for the Free Adolescent Service?
From Year nine or 13 years old, until their 18th birthday all children regardless of whether they are working or studying are eligible.
How many free visits is my child eligible for?
Children in New Zealand are entitled to one free check up per calendar year. If there is another problem like a tooth ache during the year, they are able to make another free appointment, where the tooth ache will be assessed.
What’s involved in my child’s free dental appointment?
When your child sees a dentist you can expect, an examination of your child’s mouth, scaling, prophylaxis (cleaning) treatment when required, oral health education and orthodontic referrals if required. If any orthodontic treatment is required this is not free.
Do all dental practices offer free adolescent dentistry?
No, the practice must have an adolescent contract with the District Health Board, which our practice does.
What happens when my child turns 18?
When your child turns 18 dental treatment in New Zealand is no longer free.
