“What I love about my job, is putting a smile on the faces of my clients” so says Tracey Heka, home support worker for Te Hiku Hauora home support services. Tracey has been a home support worker for the past 15 years and what she finds most rewarding about her role is when her clients are able to smile or laugh, even though they may be battling some personal or medical issues and knowing that the help that she’s provided; in its own way, has contributed to that smile. With a genuine desire to assist clients to become independent in their own homes, Tracey not only provides care but also encourages clients to become actively involved in their personal care or home management as their circumstances permit. She says she does this role because “You get to meet a lot of different people and its rewarding, plus its whanau orientated”
John Lowe is one of Tracey’s clients; he says that having home based support services has“…helped me a lot. Knowing that my support worker is there to help, not just me but also my partner, when the situation arises” Having a stranger in your home may cause some anxiety but to those who may be a bit hesitant of requesting home support for this reason, John advises that it “…depends on who it is. Having a first impression helps, as well as recommendations from other clients” He sums his support worker, Tracey up with one word “Brilliant” and recommends Te Hiku Hauora home support services to anyone.
