Te Hiku Hauora is privileged to provide local secondary school students who show outstanding achievement in Te Reo Māori with an award of a $200 book voucher and a merit certificate.

The award is presented to one deserving student from each year (Year 9 to year 13 being a total of $1,000) along with a merit certificate. This year awards were made available to Taipa Area School, Te Rangi Aniwaniwa, Abundant Life, Kaitaia College and Broadwood Area School.

The study of Te Reo Māori has become an increasingly popular degree option as a result of evolving government policy and social attitudes. Careers are available in areas such as teaching, library work, law, research, iwi organisations, policy analysts, service delivery areas of government, local body and private organisations.

Language revitalisation is key to retaining Maori cultural identity and uniqueness in the world, gives students expertise in a major aspect of their own culture and something they can be very proud of; this is why Te Hiku Hauora is committed to offering the merit award to students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in Te Reo Māori.

Kaitaia College, year 13 student award recipient Thomas Watts says he wants to be a professional rugby player and that he’d probably buy something on rugby with his book voucher.

The book voucher will help towards her course materials.

Her fellow year 12 student, D’Angelo Martin aspires to continue using Te Reo as a Te Reo Māori teacher “Ko ōku moemoea a muri i te kura kia haere ki te whare Wananga o Waikato hei whiwhi tohu mō ngā mahi kaiako o roto i te Reo Māori me te Hakinakina”.
